Holiday Entryway Organization: Where 12 Guests' Boots and Coats Go
Publié le  Mis à jour le

Twelve guests means 24 boots, 12 coats and a doormat's worth of slush, all arriving in the same ten minutes. Your entryway is set up for your household, not a party. Here is a one-night overflow plan that gives every boot, coat and bag a place before the doorbell rings.

Set up four zones before guests arrive. A boot tray zone right inside the door. A shallow shoe cabinet cleared the day before, so your household's shoes come off the floor. A folding table nearby as the coat and bag station. And a wet zone with a mat and towels, so slush stays at the door and off the rest of your floors.

How much entryway space do 12 guests actually need?

A dozen guests bring twelve pairs of winter boots, twelve coats, and a pile of bags, hats and mitts. The boots need the most floor. Line up one pair of your own winter boots side by side, measure the space they cover, and multiply by twelve. That number is the tray area your entryway has to find.

Then look at what already lives on that floor. Check how much of it your household's own shoes already take. Clearing those first is the cheapest square footage you will find all season.

Zone 1: Where should guests put their boots?

Boots go on trays right inside the door, before anyone takes a second step. Guests drop them in the first place they see, so put the trays where that is. Line them along one wall, heels to the wall, and run a second row if the first fills up.

Move your own family's boots out for the night, to the garage, a closet or a back door. Every pair you relocate is one more guest pair that lands on a tray instead of the floor. Keep one spare tray within reach for the late arrivals who always come in together.

Zone 2: What should you clear out of the shoe cabinet before guests arrive?

A shallow shoe cabinet's job on party night is to make your household's everyday shoes disappear, so the floor goes to guests. CEHA shoe cabinets are 6 inches deep, so they fit behind a door or along a narrow hall wall where a standard cabinet would block the path.

Each shelf holds 2 pairs. A 3-door cabinet holds 6 pairs, a 4-door holds 8, and a 5-door holds 10. The day before, move off-season and rarely worn pairs to a closet, then fill every tier with the shoes that normally sit on your mat. If your guests usually bring indoor shoes to change into, leave one tier empty for them.

Tall winter boots are a job for the trays, not the cabinet. The tilt-out compartments are built for shoes, which is exactly why clearing them of your own pairs frees so much floor. For choosing a size, see our guide to shallow shoe cabinets for small entryways.

Zone 3: Where do a dozen coats go when the closet is full?

A folding table set up near the entry or in a spare room becomes the coat and bag station. Coats lie flat instead of piling on a bed or a chair back, bags sit underneath, and the whole station folds away after the last guest leaves.

CEHA's Multipurpose Folding Table (KMH) measures 47 inches wide, 27.5 inches deep and 28 inches high. It needs no assembly, has a 1-inch scratch-resistant melamine top, and its welded, powder-coated legs have built-in levellers, which helps on an uneven basement or hallway floor.

Lay coats in arrival order so people find theirs fast at the end of the night. Put bags under the table and a basket at one end for hats and mitts. Keep the table out of the wet zone so no one's wool coat lands next to a dripping boot. If you're weighing a table for year-round use too, our guide on where folding tables earn their space covers the everyday side.

Zone 4: How do you stop slush from reaching the rest of the house?

The wet zone is the strip of floor between the door and the boot trays, and its only job is to catch water. Lay an absorbent mat there and keep a towel folded on top of the nearest surface for drips. Halfway through the evening, swap the towel and wipe the trays.

Keep the wet zone and the coat station apart. Slush travels on socks, and socks walk straight to wherever the coats are. A powder-coated steel shoe cabinet wipes clean with a cloth if melt splashes it, and the ventilated models help damp shoes air out overnight.

What should you set up the night before?

Six steps, about 30 minutes:

  1. Count confirmed guests and measure one pair of winter boots to size the tray area.

  2. Move off-season shoes out of the shoe cabinet and refill it with the pairs that live on your mat.

  3. Relocate your family's boots to the garage, a closet or the back door.

  4. Set out the boot trays along one wall inside the door, plus one spare.

  5. Unfold the folding table in its coat-station spot and put a basket at one end.

  6. Lay the wet-zone mat and fold two towels nearby.

After the last guest leaves, dry the trays, wipe the cabinet, fold the table away, and put your family's boots back. The entryway is back to normal before breakfast.

Holiday entryway questions

Can winter boots go in a shallow shoe cabinet?

Tall winter boots are better on a tray. CEHA shallow shoe cabinets are 6 inches deep with tilt-out compartments that hold 2 pairs of shoes per shelf, so they suit everyday shoes. On party night, use the cabinet to clear your household's shoes off the floor and give the trays to guests' boots.

Is a folding table better than a coat rack for party coats?

For a one-night crowd, a folding table usually works better. Coats lie flat instead of sliding off hooks, bags fit underneath, and guests find their coat by where they left it. A freestanding coat rack can tip when it's loaded unevenly. The table also folds away after, so it doesn't take permanent floor space.

When should you set up the entryway for holiday guests?

The night before. Clearing the shoe cabinet and relocating your family's boots takes the most time, and both are easier without guests in the house. On the day, all that's left is a quick check that the trays, table, mat and towels are in place.

Set the entryway once, host all season

Four zones turn the busiest ten minutes of a party into the easiest: boots on trays, household shoes in the cabinet, coats on the table, slush on the mat. Set it up once and reuse it for every gathering this winter. Browse shallow shoe cabinets in 3, 4 and 5-door sizes, or the Multipurpose Folding Table for your coat station.
